Volunteer Voices
David Chassis, Volunteer, CASA of Travis County, Austin, Texas
Why do you volunteer for CASA?
I love the innocence and truthfulness of children and believe our society should do everything possible to insure they reach there individual potential. By investing our resources in helping those children who are not fortunate enough to have a safe and caring home environment, we assist in making their world and ours more compassionate and loving. Another reason why I volunteer is the realization of how blessed I am in coming from a childhood of warmth and safety and having well-cared for and loved children and grandchildren; and by volunteering, I want to give back to the universe to those children who were not as fortunate as my family and me. I want to make a difference in the life of a child.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering for CASA?
A CASA volunteer is a hands-on person who gets to know their kid (s) so intimately that they are the best qualified advocate to inform the judge what actions need to be taken to provide a safe and permanent home for their charge (s). It is an exhilarating experience to realize how significant a difference a volunteer can make in the life of a child. In addition, being an advocate changes the volunteer's life by the lessons they learn from their CASA kids who survive in a world of apathy and harm yet still possessing an amazing and extraordinary qualities of resiliency, hope and love they can use to build a prosperous future life.
