My story - David Chassis

I've been a CASA volunteer for 7 years and have handled about 15 children. The last two thirds of my cases have been teenage boys and one of them that I am presently representing is an individual that's extraordinary. He was a Katrina victim, came to Austin at 15 1/2 years of age, not knowing anybody. And when I first met him about a year ago, I was looking forward to seeing a child that was going to be agitated, dysfunctional, like most teenagers are. What I found was a very jovial, interesting, curious young man and I was ready to teach him lessons of life. Well I found out he taught me a lot more. He taught how to reach out for love and understanding in a world of despair. He taught me how to focus, where he went for his high school diploma instead of just getting a GED. He showed me how to be open to receive love and understanding. So I probably learned more life lessons from him than I gave him. He is doing extraordinary well; he's graduating high school and is going to college. This is a success story that I could not have imagined a year ago.
